You and your crew work from the same script, but often you’re not on the same page; in this hands-on workshop you will learn “industry standard” script break down practices, screen dynamics, shot sequencing as well as camera placement and departmental communication techniques.  These techniques and practices will streamline your shooting schedule, ensure proper coverage and help you make conscious choices regarding the emotional impact that shot angle, distance and the composition will have on your story.             

Who should take this workshop?

Anyone who cannot read a scene from a script and with confidence quickly create a shooting plan that guarantees proper coverage, artistic composition, proper point of view while staying “on time and on budget” would benefit many times over from learning and practicing these essential skills.

DAY ONE

During this exercise you will be introduced to the spatial relationship and shot sequencing decisions every director must make again and again.

4:00 PM - Shooting Exercise #2

 During this exercise you’ll begin to work with more of the artistic elements of shot design and sharpen your skills in the art of cinematic illusion.

DAY TWO

9:00 AM  - Communicating Your Vision

• Understanding what other departments need to know

• Tools for communication

10:00 AM - Introducing sound

• Choosing the right equipment or sound person

• Technical audio overview

11:00 AM - Working with Actors

• Directing with the objective and as if technique

• Blocking fundamentals

12:30  Lunch

1:00 PM - Shooting Exercise #3

During this exercise you will work a master shot inter-cuts and cutaways as you with bring an actor through three spatial zone while talking with at least one person in each zone at different physical distances.  Spatial relationships, eye-line, intention and shot sequencing are just a few of the dynamics you’ll be working with as you shoot this mise-en-scene.
